More Than an Instrument

For as long as I can remember, something always felt like it was missing.

I spent years searching for happiness, believing that if I could just find the right place, the right people, or a different way of living, everything would finally fall into place.

It wasn’t until much later that I realised I wasn’t really searching for happiness at all.

I was searching for the feeling of being safe.

Without even realising it, I had forgotten what it felt like to truly feel safe.

Looking back now, I can see how much of my life I spent surviving instead of truly living.

I was bullied for many years, and throughout my life I often felt misunderstood, unseen and unheard for who I truly was. Somewhere along the way, I learned to adapt instead of expressing myself. To stay strong instead of vulnerable. To become the person I thought I needed to be, rather than the person I truly was.

Deep down, I slowly lost the feeling that there was space for me to simply exist.

Life brought me through traumatic experiences, caring for a seriously ill partner, painful relationship endings, saying goodbye to loved ones, years of working in challenging environments, three burnouts, and eventually a major workplace conflict.

More than once, life asked me to start over from the ground up, letting go of almost everything I thought I had built.

Little by little, my nervous system forgot what it felt like to rest. Constant stress, chest pain, heart palpitations, panic attacks, nightmares, and living in a constant state of alertness slowly became my normal.

Somewhere along the way, I lost trust in life, in other people, and perhaps most of all, in myself.

Yet somewhere deep inside, a quiet voice kept reminding me that life could be different.

I longed for a slower, simpler life. More nature. More freedom. More presence. A life where I could reconnect with myself instead of constantly trying to hold everything together.

That longing changed the direction of my life.

It was during this period that the handpan truly entered my life.

I had always felt drawn to its sound, but somehow the moment had never felt right.

Now it was.

The first time I placed my hands on the handpan, something happened that I still find difficult to describe. My breathing slowed, the constant alertness softened, and for the first time in a very long time, I wasn’t trying to stay one step ahead of life.

I wasn’t trying to fix anything. I wasn’t trying to survive.

I could simply be.

The handpan became much more than an instrument. It became a place where I could return to myself. A place where my nervous system could finally rest, and where I slowly began to trust myself again.

Every time I play, I am reminded that we don’t always need more answers. Sometimes, we simply need enough stillness to hear what has always been there.

Today, every piece of music I share is a reflection of that journey. A journey of slowing down, learning to trust again, and discovering that sometimes the most meaningful moments aren’t found in doing more, but in allowing ourselves to simply be.

Every time I sit down with my handpan, it gently reminds me to come back to this moment.

I’ve learned that the peace we are searching for isn’t always something we have to find.

Sometimes, it has been quietly waiting for us all along.

The answers rarely shout.

They whisper.

We just need to listen…
